DEREALIZATION 1922 (2018)

Screen print, cardboard, found paper, wire, foam, faux fur, polymer clay, plywood, inkjet print, projection

The Natural History Museum has a vast lineage of display rules and mechanisms. Suspension of belief, framing a scene frozen in time, and precise lighting are methods practiced in its own institutional dogma.

The installation is built to mimic viewer's perception of the display, fit with its wood paneling, dim lighting, and quaint composition. However, it is not fully enclosed, allowing the viewer to investigate the bare bones of the curated image. The exposure of the display's inner workings ground the viewer in reality: the bear is gone, lost nearly one hundred years ago.
